MLB: Angels vs Tigers MAY 1

The Angels are treading water, but regardless of any changes Scioscia makes throughout the season, they will get better. They are a good team and that will show eventually. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t have an opinion. In my dream (but very scary) scenario where I am the Angels manager, there are four changes that I would make to the Angels roster.

1. Play Brandon Wood only against left handed pitching: In his career, Brandon Wood has not hit lefties better than righties, but this season, his numbers are slightly better against them. I think it’s time to come to the realization that he is not going to be the player we all want him to be this year. Most of his issues are mental and I think hitting him only against lefties would do a lot for his confidence. We also simply need more production, which means Izturis needs more playing time when he comes back.

2. Make Fernando Rodney the closer…mostly: I’m sorry, I know Scioscia is loyal, but I am so tired of hearing that our bullpen lines up better when Brian Fuentes is good. That is just not true. Our bullpen would line up best if we made Fuentes a left handed specialist. Last season (when he was “good”) lefties hit .239 on Fuentes, and righties hit .261. Against Fernando Rodney last year lefties hit .269 and righties hit .223. Somebody tell me why this has to be one person’s job when the Angels would clearly be better off with a platoon.

3. Give Matsui some rest: I say this knowing that Matsui will play very little in National League ballparks, but the point still remains. Matsui already has 146 AB’s this season, while all last year, he only had 456. Toward the beginning of his career, Matsui had an incredible streak of consecutive games, and he probably thinks that is still possible, but its not. Get some rest!

4. I could use a little more cowbell…I mean Willits: The Angels brand of baseball has slightly diminished this season. We all know that Erick Aybar is capable of stealing bases, but until he learns how to be more consistent, we need a little more Reggie Willits. He would be a nice complement to Aybar batting ninth every now and then. Reggie always put up a good at bat, and can really give teams a lot of trouble while on base.

Don’t worry Scioscia, I won’t be taking your job any time soon.
