grichuk

In case you haven’t heard, the Angels need some young power, and young power is what they went after in the 2009 MLB draft. The Angels had two first round compensation picks for Francisco Rodriguez (1-0, 0.68ERA 15SV) and Mark Teixeira (.286, 18HR 51RBI). It was important for them to get some athletic hitters to refill their farm system.

At pick number 24, the Angels selected Randal Grichuk, a 6′0″, 185-lb outfield power bat. Grichuk comes from Lamar Consolidated High School in Rosenburg Texas. Scouts rave about this guy’s quick hands, which should allow him to get around on those Major League fastballs and help a team that needs a little pop in their lineup.

At pick number 25, the Angels get a multi-position player in Mike Trout, who comes from Millville High School in New Jersey. In High School, he played shortstop and pitched; however, the Angels see him becoming a middle outfielder. He is a five tool player with all the skills to be successful, and has the ability to pitch if the Angels really need him to.

This was a great first round for the Angels. They drafted a couple of outfielders that should help out at the Major League level sooner rather than later.
